Background & Problem definition

With today’s technologies, we can go wireless anywhere on the planet, but the inside of a ship remains perhaps the last frontier. The reason for this is the Faraday cage, which prevents wireless signals from passing through steel barriers, such as bulkheads and decks. Consequently, the world fleet operates inefficiently, with higher energy consumption than needed and at an unnecessarily low level of safety during emergencies. 

Wireless technology has enabled us to create some incredible innovations and improvements on land totally changing the competitive landscape. Providing new wireless capabilities onboard for a low cost gives us the ability to scale quickly and connect sensors, devices, equipment, machinery and the environment with each other via the Internet of Things, solving problems and needs never been possible before.  

Technology

Over the last six years, ScanReach has developed the world’s first wireless Internet of Things platform designed specifically for complex steel environments such as onboard ships. The platform can be installed within hours, even while the vessel is in operation obtaining full onboard wireless connectivity throughout the vessel.  

A major barrier to innovation, problem-solving, and value creation has been removed. It is now possible to connect wirelessly to people, sensors, assets, and the environment inside the vessel, revealing a completely new level of innovation. As a result of this technological breakthrough, we will see development and acceleration of next-generation digital maritime services and solutions potentially changing the maritime competitive landscape.

Making use of our breakthrough technology ScanReach has started the development of end-to-end solutions solving the most important problems and use cases required by the maritime and shipping industry. So far, we have already launched a personal safety system for crew (ConnecPOB), a fleet data management platform for wireless collected onboard data (ConnectFleet), and a wireless fuel management and awareness system (ConnectFuel).

Cabling is not an option due to time, cost and complexity of installation.

In case of emergency, the operating emergency rooms offshore and onshore will have instant information of personnel in distress and their whereabouts.

Problem definition

Until now cabling has been required to obtain connectivity and to transfer data in large and complicated steel environments such as onboard offshore rigs. Steel has been the main barrier for wireless data communication and the needed wireless connectivity below deck hindering needed innovation within performance, safety and sustainability.

The reason for this is the Faraday cage, which prevents wireless signals from passing through steel barriers, such as bulkheads and decks. Consequently, the world fleet operates inefficiently and at an unnecessarily low level of safety during emergencies and training. 

Safety is crucial, being remote from medical assistance. The muster, search and rescue drills are important to maintain everybody’s required focus and knowledge of actions if needed. Normally the exercises are executed every fortnight, as a minimum. The drills may last for hours if someone are not located swiftly.

Get full POB control for windfarm and supporting vessels in the same wireless solution.

Problem definition

Safety for personnel and crew is high on the agenda when new offshore wind parks are being built and start operating around the world. The offshore wind market is growing fast with nearly 20% growth rate for the next five years. Having POB (Personnel-On-Board) control on offshore wind farms is complex with a high number of service personnel spread out on different wind turbines and onboard supporting vessels at the same time. 

To obtain a high level of safety and POB control there is a need for a completely new wireless connectivity technology that can work well in steel environments such as inside a SOV vessel or wind turbine. The connectivity technology must have the capability to wirelessly penetrate steel in order to track and communicate with personnel and at the same time have the capability to connect and mesh every wind turbine and the vessel in real time. The system must be easy to install and without the need for cabling.
